I made this thread because i like all the different cultures in the world. And after the carepackage thread i wanted everybody to know what a great country The Netherlands is. Everybody can tell about their country and brag about everything
.
The Netherlands (or Holland)- small country in Europe in the shape of a lion:
- population: 16.515.057 peeps
- 41.526 km²
- monarchy (Queen Beatrix)
- surrounded by the North Sea in the west an north, Germany on the east and Belgium on the south
- also known as The Low Lands
- flag:
- royal crest of The Netherlands:
- National anthom is called The Wilhelmus and it has 14 couplets
- our national color is orange, cause the royal family has "van Oranje" as their last name
- The west side of The Netherlands is protected by dikes. If they werent there half our country would be flouded with water.
- mostly flat, no mountains, just water...water...water everywhere you look.
The highest point in the country is called the ‘mountain’ and it is as much as 323 meters high.- yes, we are all cheeseheads, we eat a lot of cheese and drink a lot of milk
- no we dont walk on clogs anymore and dont live in windmills. There are a few left who live like that, but the most of us just walk on normal shoes and live in normal houses
- our capital is Amsterdam
- we became 2nd in the soccer world cup, some of us are still very sad we didnt win so its a delicate subject to talk about here since soccer is our main sport. We call ourself the Orange Legion and our soccer fans are really crazy. But they never cause any problems like fighting, they just like a big party
This is me with my best friend Kim on the finalday of the world cup:
Some stupid facts, and i am proud of them!
- we have the best peanutbutter of the whole wide world
- we eat mayonaise with our frensh fries
- gay marriage is legal
- people in the Netherlands eat raw herring with onions on top
- Amsterdam has 1,281 bridges
- when Dutch schoolchildren pass their exams, they hang a Dutch flag and a school bag outside their homes
- Dutch is also spoken in Belgium, northern France, Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba
- Amsterdam is built entirely on piles
- almost every Dutch person has a bicycle and there are twice as many bikes as cars
- you'll find flowers in almost every Dutch living room
- Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, but The Hague is the seat of government
- most Dutch people speak at least one foreign language
- after Scandinavians, the Dutch are the world's biggest coffee drinkers
-The country is called 'The Netherlands' by the Dutch themselves (well actually we call it
Nederland, but we don't expect foreigners to use that word). There are two provinces called 'Holland'. Holland was the largest most powerful province in the Dutch Republic when it got started. It's the province that contains both Amsterdam, nominal capital and The Hague (Den Haag), official capital where the government is.
- the term Dutch stems from the Germanic term 'duutsch' - which referred to the germanic people. The germanic people were all the people speaking germanic languages - now Dutch, German, Friesisch and various dialects in the region. The 'Pensylvania Dutch' is a term that derives from the old meaning - these are people who emigrated from what's now the Netherlands and Germany to what's now the USA. Dutch people call Germans 'Duits' - which makes the term 'Dutch' for ourselves a bit weird. Currently the term 'Dutch' is used in English both for the people of The Netherlands, and the language they speak. Both are called 'Nederlands' in Dutch.
- Our most popular entertainer has a registered relationship with another man. Together they have adopted two kids from the USA
- We have an excellent public transportation system. But the Dutch themselves complain about frequent delays - by which they mean delays of occasional delays of 5 minutes to half an hour (though sometimes longer)
- I live in one of the richest countries in the world - the only reason we aren't in the G10 is because it's so small (only 16 million people: that's less than live in New York).
- by any international standard Dutch people are simply rude
- Holland has the highest museum density in the world, with almost 1000 museums
- As many as 300 castles in the counrty are open to the public
- ice skating is the 2nd biggest sport
- most famous dutch persons: Rutger Hauer, Paul Verhoeven, Famke Janssen, Vincent van Gogh, Rembrandt, Arjen Robben and Johan Cruijf.
sorry long list, but theres much more to talk about. But i will leave it at this.
