I thought it would be fun for the Joker "readers" to create a book club! Or maybe just a selected reading list!

I am about to start 'Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. In case people don't know this book is being made into a movie and will star Robert Patterson.

My girlfriend asked me to read it for two reasons:

1.) so I can go see it with her in the theatre!
2.) The Author actually lives in Illinois in a neighboring town! So my bff Ashley is hoping I will love the book so much that I will help her e-mail stalk the Author into maybe doing a bookclub Q&A with her fans!

I will update this post once I have finished reading it! Smile

Update:

So I finished reading Water for Elephants and I loved it so much!

-It is the story of Jacob Jankowski who is 90 or 93 and living in a nursing home.
-The story moves back and forth between the present (nursing home) and past (memories of running away with the circus.
-The author includes beautiful circus pictures at the beginning of each chapter that remind of when circus was in its heydey!
-It has a compelling love triangle.
-The storyline of Rosie the elephant was actually taken from many actual accounts of circus elephants! I found reading the authors notes afterwards as interesting as the story itself!

Now I am so excited to see the movie! I hope RPatt and Reece do it justice! <3

So what are you reading Jokers?

This summer, I read "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova.

The title seems boring, but trust me, the story is far from that!
- It is the curious story of a Historian who mysteriously finds an ancient book with the imprint of a dragon on it. It was bizarre because the book was so ancient that it would be worth a fortune. Why was it lying there in front of him in the library?
- The historian knows a lot about Transylvanian and Russian medieval history, but still does not recognize the symbol.
- He travels in searches the truth behind the symbol, and discovers the story of Dracula, not the vampire we know, but Dracula who was a military leader of Transylvania back in the days who, according to history, mysteriously disappeared.
- Throughout the whole story, it is sort of a journal of events a male historian wrote + collections of letters pertaining to the story + the end of it is the completion of the journal by the man's daughter who is also a historian.
This story basically combines a series of true historical and geographical facts with a sci-fi twist which I love Smile

The book is huge. This is probably one of the reasons that attracted me towards reading it (I was searching for a story that would not end too quickly XD)

Pam, I enjoy your list of movies. Especially the last one...lmao.

I am weird...I think I've seen every version of Alice In Wonderland known to man. It's always been my favorite book and since I was young, I started watching any version I could get my hands on. Not a fan of the newest one with Johnny Depp...I think he is overrated. But I have this one version where the whole movie dialogue takes place in Alice's head...it's so weird and creepy. I love it <3

Do you also read books on Alice in the Wonderland? I heard there is a good book on the Queen of Hearts character in it Smile by the same author who wrote a book on the witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. Maybe pammy has read it Joker Book Club! 466340

The Author you are referring to is Gregory Maquire. He wrote "Wicked" and lots of other remakes. I haven't read the one about the Queen of Hearts yet. But I have read "Son of a Witch (wicked part 2), Mirror Mirror (Snow White) and Confessions of an ugly stepsister (Cinderella). I told myself I have to read the 20 plus books I brought home from the public library (they were giving books away) before I can buy anymore! Joker Book Club! 429299

I brought this quote to the Book Club thread so as not to change the topic of Movie thread too much

YES ITS THAT AUTHOR I'M TALKING ABOUT! Smile I didn't know his name, but I've heard many good things about his books. I plan on reading a few of his books this summer Smile

I just finished reading "Rise and Shine" by Anna Quindlin.

This is the 3rd novel by the author I have read. I have also read "Black and Blue" (a story about domestic abuse) and "One True Thing" (a story involving an adult child returning home to care for a terminally ill mother)

I really enjoyed 'Rise and Shine" it is the story of 2 sisters, Bridget and Meghan Fitzmaurice. The sisters love each other, but couldn't be more different. One a social worker, the other a famous tv morning show host and there is one moment that changes their lives forever.

Meghans seemingly perfect life is turned upside down and she is unprepared to handle the adversity. Bridget, who has always lived in her older sisters shadow is now uncertain with how to deal with her perceptions of her sister, their complex childhood, and herself.

I dont want to say too much more, in case I ruin it for anyone else that might want to read it. But I will say I enjoyed the story, (set in New York) very much!

Some of that stuff is photoshopped. And I dont know what you mean by "light" noodz. I've seen some full frontal man-junk. So I run away screaming in horror.

Not that I am usually afraid of man-junk. But the man-junk in that mag is usually crazy gross body modification stuff.

If you liked 2 girls 1 cup. Or Goatse. This is the mag for you.

I always tell people to read "Until They Bring The Streetcars Back", "Amos", "Finding Laura Buggs", and "Growing An Inch" all by Stanley Gordon West. Until They Bring The Streetcars Back, Finding Laura Buggs, and Growing an Inch are all connected with one another.

I also recommend "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. Great Book!

For those who are into graphic novels my friend had me read Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman" series. Very good books! Smile

I looove Neil Gaiman. I've read most of his works except The Sandman Series (they are pretty expensive and I can't afford to buy one because then I would have to buy them all)

I love his books with collection of short stories like Smokes and Mirrors and Fragile Things.

He is also the author of Coraline and Stardust, both been adapted into movies.

The only time I got really bored of a book, is when I tried to read Lord of the Rings, I feel asleep after the 1st chapter. This was before the movie, cause I liked it after that.

Anyway I love reading VC Andrews books, they're all super messed up and demented and for some reason I find them all so pleasantly enjoyable to read... perhaps this is saying something deep about my subconscious, who knows. Oh and I recently discovered that the majority of VC Andrews books are not written by VC Andrews... they're still great regardless of who writes them tho XD

I use to read all the VC Andrews. But yes, the Author has been dead for ages. (She passed away from breast cancer in 1986) It's a Tupac thing. They just keep churning out books with a ghost writer. Its not a secret anymore though, the ghost writer is horror novelist Andrew Neiderman.

I read quite a few of the VC Andrews series. Of course Flowers in the Attic series, Heaven series, Ruby series and Dawn. My fav book of hers was the stand alone, "My Sweet Audrina." I think I like it most, because it doesnt follow the same plotline as all the rest.

Before she died, VC Andrews said in an interview that she created 50 or 60 outlines for other novels. So I don't know if the ghostwriter uses those, or if he's doing his own stories now.

PostSubject: Re: Joker Book Club!    Joker Book Club! EmptyTue May 10, 2011 5:31 pm

I just finished reading a book today actually.

It was a book by an author called Schutz. I'd never actually heard of him before, but a few people I know recommended it to me. I'm not that much of a reader, but it was a reasonable price on Amazon so I thought it couldn't hurt to get it.

It's a good length read.. A little over 400 pages (nothing compared to what Von posted on the previous page I'm sure!), should be enough to keep you entertained for a while at least (well, it kept me interested all the way through; but maybe my standards are lower than other peoples', as I've barely read any fiction for around 5 years)

I heard it's actually based on a slightly older book. By all accounts this is a significant improvement over the older work; but I haven't had the opportunity to compare the two. I guess you have to dock marks for originality whatever the case. Coming up with the first version of anything is harder than reworking and improving something that's already there in my eyes. I don't know how other people here feel about taking ideas from older books and using them afresh.

As for the actual content.. It's a very coherent book: you can follow it from start to end without ideas jumping around all over the place. However, it's something you will have to think very hard about at times if you want to get the most out of it. There were points where I actually had to stop reading for a while to just think about what was being said. It's not something I'd recommend as light reading as it will make you think about ideas you have most likely never even considered before (I wouldn't go so far as to proclaim it life-changing or anything as dramatic as that however.)

So if you want to be challenged, want to think, want to learn, and are willing to put the time in; I'd certainly recommend you this book. You can find more details here.
