PostSubject: Kombucha   Wed Aug 17, 2011 1:57 pm

Does anyone else drink Kombucha? I had my first one yesterday, I bought it at my grocery store not realy realizing what exactly it was (I thought it was just another fancy designer juice drink...lol)

The flavor was called Gingerade. At first I absolutely hated it. It was very strong and very vinegary. I had let it sit on my desk for half a day so it was warm. Yuck! But I got a cup of ice, and poured it in, and it tasted alot better.

So I researched it, and now know it has lots of health benefits, and might try to incorporate it into my diet a few times a week.

Plus I woke up really early this morning (before the alarm) and was wide awake and fully energized. I managed to clean the living room, dining room and kitchen all before 7am. LMAO. I still feel really energized and have plowed through all the work on my desk as well.

Thoughts?

i have a health nut friend always drinking it and telling me to drink it, but if you get it and it's old or near expiration date it ferments and turns to alcohol... that and it already has small alcoholic level... seeing how I'm allergic to alcohol I'm not gonna bother trying it XD

lizz <-- thats right this guy is gonna appear in all my posts Razz

I read about that. The Kombucha was yanked off the store shelves because it is unpasturized and the longer it sets the alcohol (a natural by-product of fermentation) increases. Almost all commercial distributors have changed their formula so that doesnt occur...but it would be an issue for people that make home-brewed kombucha.

Technically the commercial stuff has .05 or less alcohol, so per the FDA regulations it is not an alcoholic drink, but since you have allergies, its probably best you steer clear.

I bought another one yesterday (Mango Madness) and made Evil try it.

His first impression? He agrees it was horribly gross and vinegary. I am still trying to harp about the health benefits. I may have to sit on him though if I ever want him to drink it again.

I have a Gingerberry Kombucha in the fridge for later in the week. I am going to try to have 2 - 3 a week and try to see if I notice any changes.

I do feel incredibly energized. And a man was chatting me up at the drink case about it yesterday and said it has seriously dropped his sugar levels. (he's diabetic)

I am going to read up more on the health benefits. Maybe I'll ask on CL if anyone drinks it.

Ooh I will try to find this on the Canadian store shelves. I need extra energy when I can get it. I've been popping tylenol like m&m's these past few days due to lack of sleep which causes me headaches. >_< :S

Doesn't sound like my cup of tea so to speak.. (Yes, even if it does contain alcohol Pam :-P)

I never knew Both Von and Liz were allergic to Alcohol! Can you not use products that contain alcohol on your skin either? or is it more of an ingestion thing?

I've yet to do a skin test, so I haven't had my allergy confirmed. I haven't had any reaction to skin products with alcohol.. I think for me, it may be something with the fermentation more than the alcohol itself.

I get rashes 2-4 hrs post eating food cooked with wine or a sip of wine. My rashes persist a good 1-2 weeks D:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/375802-allergic-reaction-rash-to-alcoholic-drinks/

It could be an intolerance, not an allergy. But, if you think it IS an allergy, you ought to be checked out. There are many things than go into making different kinds of alcoholic beverages (grapes, hops, wheat, yeasts, etc), so you need to find out what it is you're allergic to in order to not encounter it in other foods, possibly even in a stronger concentration.

haha it's complicated, it's not exactly an allergy in the normal sense, I have a weird disease where the symptoms of the disease are turned on by certain foods. Alcoholic drinks have the strongest effect on me, then caffeine, then spicy food.

But the more I experiment the more I've learned what I can eat, and when I can eat it.

But it's usually harder to explain it then to just say "i'm allergic" cause technically I am allergic in the sense that my body is not processing it correctly and has a negative reaction.

Just to update about me and the kombucha, I know officially love it and try to drink it once a week if not more. Its pricy though so sometimes the pennies in my wallet do not add up to enough for me to purchase.

Wail

They now have kombuchas with chia seeds in it, and I strictly drink those. Chia seeds have more omega-3's then a piece of salmon! They turn the drink slightly jelly like, so I tell myself its like a jello shot.
hihi

Pills should be avoided when unnecessary. Try having some veggies as a replacement.
