I am wrapping up my visit to the United Kingdom by having the King of all breakfasts. Today I made and ate a "full fry-up."
I actually ended up finding all the ingredients I needed at my local grocery store. The have extensive European goods and it was nice finding the 2 items I thought would be tricky just a mere 2 blocks from my doorstep.
Heinz Beans -apparently these are the "baked beans" of choice among the British. Why? Not sure. Americans have probably over 20 different varieties of baked beans. Different spices added, molasses, brown sugar, chipotle, some with ham, bacon, chorizo etc... we like to flavor up our baked beans.
This was the first time I was eating them for breakfast. I wanted to make it as true as an English breakfast as I could, so Heinz Beans (in tomato sauce) was a necessity!
The second item I was worried about was the black pudding. I was prepared to go into the city to search for it, but once again, I didn't need to. I found it in the meat cooler along with other European meats and cheeses.
So first I set out and double checked that I had all my ingredients:
Wow was this an undertaking! I had to take a few minutes to figure out the timing of everything, so it could all be done relatively within the same time frame.
I popped the bacon into the oven to cook and browned the sausages. heated the beans on low, and got the hash browns going.
After the sausages were cooked, I plopped the black pudding into the same pan. The black pudding smelled like liverwurst when I first opened it. (which was a good sign, as I like liverwurst.)
The black pudding was so soft, it was hard to cook. Maybe I crowded too many into the frying pan at once, but when it came time to flip them, they started to fall apart.
So they weren't as pretty as I had hoped. But they would have to do. LOL.
I also used that same pan to cook the mushrooms, then the tomatoes and in the end fry the bread. I was excited to see if my bread took on all those yummy flavors and it did! LOL.
Here's my finished fry-up.
and now time to belly-up to the table and eat it all....
I contemplated how I was going to eat the black pudding. I thought about eating everything else first and saving it for last. Then I thought of trying it first and then quickly eating something else to get the taste out of my mouth (in case I didn't like it.)
In the end, I decided to stick it on the fork with several other items.
It was definitely different. Very soft/mushy, very strong in flavor. It kind of reminded me of liverwurst too.
I liked my meal a lot, but don't know that I would make it again. It was a lot of work! LOL. But I would definitely order it, if someone else did all the work.
My experience visiting the foods of great Britain have been fun! Maybe I'll come for another visit and try some of Cymrujams veggie dishes!
