| Yeah, patients who have had heart attacks are more at risk to have a repeat. Because heart attacks happen when the heart (heart is a muscle, so it needs nutriments too) doesn't get enough oxygen and part of the muscle dies. This occurs usually when something blocks a blood vessel that brings oxygen to the heart. Signs and symptoms that indicate a heart attack are pains that extend from your heart to your left arm. You may feel pain on left shoulder and jaw. This pain is sudden and is not provoked nor attenuated by change of body positions or eating.
For example, if you have high cholesterol, you are likely to have cholesterol buildups (think of them as agglomerate of fat molecules) in your blood vessels. They get bigger with time and with your natural coagulation factors (when your blood clots around it). It's actually okay if they stay in your blood vessels. The problem is when they break off and become mobile plaques. These plaques can move and get stuck in smaller blood vessels in your brain (cause stroke, paralysis) or in your heart (heart attack).
There are lots of risk factors for heart attacks (like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, lack of exercise, unbalanced nutrition, ...). unfortunately, most patients will have to take 4-8 new medication after their first heart attack; each medication prevents future heart attacks in different mecanism (diminishing different risk factors) so it is important to take all of them.
There are numerous effective ways of controlling your risk factors aside from taking medication, but they take a lot of motivation (exercise > 30 minutes 4 days a week, limiting salt intake to 1.7g/day = 1.5 teaspoon only!, avoid fatty foods, eat more vedgies and fruits...).
For acute treatment (when you go into emergency) of heart attacks, we have strong drugs that can break down the plaques but we don't use it for all patients (depends on your ECG test results and risk of bleeding because these drugs will greatly increase your bleeding). There is also stents (sort of like cages they put in your blood vessel wall to make sure it stays wide; these can be metal or medicated stents. medicated stents release medication that prevents blockage) or inserting a balloon just to flatten the plaques around the problematic blood vessel. These methods will only work for short term solution, the "real" treatment is long term control of risk factors.
Omg. I intended on being succinct, but it turned out to be quite long >_> | |

| i heard 1/2 of all women get heart attacks... most of which they are unaware they are having. Apparently women are less likely to have that chest pain reaction that men get(you know like int he movies) or so some program I saw on tv once was saying | |
